Synopsis :
Lindsay Lohan plays a young girl, Casey, who alienates herself from her friends and father after the death of her mother. Her father, Ben, is busy working to fill the partnership vacancy at his law firm and therefore is unwittingly distanced from her, as demonstrated when he repeatedly fails to attend her football games. Out of a desire to be compassionate, his colleague Drew buys Casey an Eve Doll (a well-known but decreasingly popular fashion doll intended to act as a “role model”) as a birthday gift. Meanwhile, Casey steals a book called Holcroft’s Book of the Dead: Volume I from a bookstore in attempt to resurrect her mother using one of the spells inside the book. She is about to begin the incantation when Drew enters the room and disorders her preparations. Moments before Casey reorganizes these, Drew uses a hairbrush formerly belonging to Casey’s mother to neaten the Eve Doll. Strands of the doll’s hair are stuck on the brush, apparently obscuring the mother’s hair. When Casey returns to her room, she works the magic, using the hair on the brush as a means of summoning its owner’s spirit. Because the mother’s hair has been covered by that of the doll, Casey wakes up the next day to find a human Eve (Tyra Banks) sleeping beside her.
Casey, furious and desperate to rectify her mistake, brings Eve to the bookstore, wanting her to obtain Holcroft’s Book of the Dead: Volume II, which contains the counterspell needed to send a summoned spirit to its native realm of existence. En route, Eve is enraptured by the stimuli she receives in the “real” world, which are implied to be more deserving of enthusiasm than those in the imaginary world created for the doll. At the bookstore, Eve reveals Casey’s theft of the earlier book, whereupon Casey flees, only to fall down in the middle of the road. She is nearly struck by a vehicle, but prevented when Eve uses her training as a police officer (one of many roles she served as a doll) to stop it.
To show gratitude to Eve, Ben loans her money, which she then uses to buy elaborate costumes for herself, and even allows her to use the guest room of their house. He later gives her a job at his law firm as a temporary worker, in which position Eve discovers that though she is a master of all activities in her fictional doll hometown, Sunnyvale, she is incompetent in the human world. However, her expertise as a cosmetic artist allows her to beautify Ben’s colleague Ellen (who suffers from low self-esteem). Later, at a dance hosted by the firm, she advises Ben’s friend Ritchie that he allow his personality to attract potential sweethearts rather than attempt to seduce them and afterward delights the company by performing her theme song Be A Star. Throughout this day, several hints are made of her true identity, but none of the people discover it.
Ben and Eve return home and nearly share a kiss, but are interrupted by Casey, who perceives the kiss as a cause to be disappointed in her father. Eve is intrigued by tears and gradually begins to understand human emotions. The two become friends when, having made a mess, laugh together at the ridiculous image they present as a result. Thereafter Casey decides against obtaining the second Holcroft’s Book of the Dead and using it to dispose of Eve. However, Eve begins to desire return to her own world when she sees that her manufacturers are about to cancel production of the dolls whereof she is an example. She immediately purchases the second Book of the Dead, intending to work the counterspell herself.
Ben, having been encouraged by Eve, attends Casey’s ultimate football game in spite of his work’s demands, inspiring her. Eve also attends, but does not remain until the end as a result of needing to reach a “Sunnyvale” display before sunset in order to complete the spell. Casey’s team loses the championship game; but Casey herself reconciles with her father and with a teammate whom she had often reprimanded for incompetence. Upon learning where Eve has gone, she hastens to follow and prevent her. At the display, Eve casts the counterspell and later shares an affectionate farewell with her hosts. As the deadline arrives, she is changed into her original form. Thereafter the integrity she has acquired as a human becomes absorbed into all dolls of her name, increasing their popularity.
Subsequently, Casey rejoins her former companions while Ben learns from Drew that he has become the firm’s partner. The film then concludes with a reprise of the theme song performed by the cast.
